“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” -C.S. Lewis
Welcome, welcome to our collective new year, 2024! There are already so many things that we know are happening this coming year, I'd like to take a moment to talk about them a little. But if you're in a hurry, you can see the new menu for next week HERE and order fresh, wholesome meals for the days you want and need those meals to be on your doorstep!
There are some very exciting events coming this year in 2024:
It's a Presidential Election Year!
The Summer Olympics in Paris, France
There's a Total Solar Eclipse!
2024 is a Leap Year!
PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, NOV 5th, 2024
I'm always amazed at how fast a new presidential election comes by, and how much older each president looks at the end of their term. Regardless of party affiliation, I always imagine it must be a very demanding job to head up the executive branch of the USA. Recently, I've been dutifully responding "STOP" to all political texts, and reading as much as I can from "good" sources. I find Heather Cox Richardson's "Letters from an American" to be highly educational and helps me to make sense of the current political news. Heather Cox Richardson is a political historian who uses facts and history to put the news in context. If you don't already follow her, you can sign up on Substack HERE, or if you would prefer to check her out on Facebook, you can see her letters published as posts in her feed HERE. Personally, I love all the historical references and all her detailed sourcing of her information.
In honor of this upcoming election year, I looked into political food--if there is such a thing besides pork barreling--and I found out there is this Senate Bean Soup that has been served at the Senate cafeteria for over 110 years! There was ONE DAY during WWII that the soup was not available due to wartime rationing, and it made the news. Ever since this soup has been there daily. You can read about it HERE on the Senate's own Traditions & Symbols section online, and HERE is a recipe from a former Senate Staffer who subsisted on the soup given their low starting salary in Washington DC.
Personally I love a good, hearty bean soup with ham. So of course we are offering it on Monday as a full meal with gf cornbread and honey-glazed carrots. Order now HERE.
SUMMER OLYMPICS IN PARIS, FRANCE!
Every TWO years we get to experience a new Olympics. This year the summer Olympics are in Paris, France! Did you know now is a good time to get your passport renewed? All last year it was super-hard to get one and took months, but the backlog has been cleared and now it appears to be back to normal, so go get thy passport renewed because I'm positive tickets to Paris, France will be very affordable this summer...NOT. But what a joy we get to celebrate these coming games with some lovely FRENCH FOOD! This week we are offering you Chicken Fricassee because the sauce is made with cream and wine and is absolutely addicting, and is why French cooking has the long, storied history that it does.
THERE IS A TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE IN 2024
There are many total eclipses, but they are relatively rare to see from the US. The last one was in 2017. This year the total solar eclipse is on April 8th and will cut a swath from Mexico & Texas and then up through New England and Canada. Book your trip early if you want to see it! You can learn more about this upcoming celestial event HERE on NASA's website. The next one will be August 23rd, 2044--20 whole years! In honor of this being a total eclipse year, we are offering our Best Black Bean Burgers for a blackout meal that is both healthy and delicious. Order those over HERE for Tuesday next week.
IT'S A LEAP YEAR!
So when the Summer Olympics are on the menu for the year, then you know it's also a leap year. We sort of flopped around thinking about how to represent that with our menu and we couldn't find anything meaningful that wasn't forced, so, heads up next month, there is an extra day!
Meanwhile, we hope you're planning for an amazing 2024, and we truly cannot wait to serve you.
Happy New Year,
Chef Ginny & Chef Mary
